There is a beautiful Chereokee legend about ghost pipe: It is said that the plant that sprang from chiefs who argued for seven days over hunting grounds, even while smoking the peace pipe. The Great Spirit transformed the chiefs into pale, drooping flowers with heads bowed in shame, and the plants are said to grow where friends or family have quarreled, serving as a silent testament.

The plant is known for its delicate, ghost-like white appearance and its unique biology. It lacks chlorophyll and derives nutrients from fungi in a parasitic relationship.
