The Three Hares, 2026 | chine colle, woodcut print , watercolor, stitching & beadwork on paper | 9 x 12"

Ever since I was a little girl, I have had an affinity for nature, rabbits and black raspberry bushes. I've revisited a lot of old childhood memories recently and it has inspired me to create this unique piece.

In Buddhism, The Three Hares represent the interconnectedness of all living things, the cyclical nature of the universe, and reincarnation. Pagans associate the three hares with the lunar cycle, fertility, and the Triple Goddess.

Black raspberries symbolize resilience, abundance, and the duality of temptation. When you see a beautiful, dark, juicy, sweet berry- you impulsively reach out to pick it without noticing that it is completely surrounded by thorns before it's too late. Black raspberry thorns require caution and patience when navigating. Impulsive, emotional or reactive decisions can result in painful lessons that can leave you covered in thorns and scars. Someone who chooses to walk a path through the brambles must learn patience, control, self-regulation and focus.

Brambles thrive in harsh conditions- but still manage to grow sweet fruit; the ability to prosper despite challenges. They thrive and grow back stronger and more abundant each year.

There are plenty of other fruits that are easier to harvest, but those who choose to pick black raspberries instead (like myself) often pick the more challenging roads in life. Those challenging roads lead us on complicated journeys that are difficult and painful to navigate- but are ultimately destined to lead to beautiful final destinations. We might be covered in scars and stitches, but they are reminders of how far we have come and where we are going.
